Our History

On February 8, 1975, eight past students of The Mico met for an inaugural meeting and launched the Mico University College Alumni Association – New York Chapter. Shortly thereafter, it was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization. Despite growing pains over the years, the Association stands as a strong and viable presence among Jamaican organizations in New York City.

Aims & Objectives

  • To foster interest in The Mico’s past, present, and future, and to celebrate the accomplishments of her students.

  • To develop initiatives beneficial to members and the communities in which they live.

Our Impact

Over the years, The Mico University College, New York Chapter has made substantial contributions to its Alma Mater.

In 1979, proceeds from a car raffle funded the construction of a Library cum Museum.

The Chapter has also provided scholarships and grants, including the Renford A. Shirley Scholarship for graduating seniors (one male and one female), the Legacy Scholarship for financially challenged second-year students, and Heritage Scholarships in Science, Education, and Business for New York-based graduating seniors.

Additional contributions have supported the Union of Jamaican Alumni Association (UJAA) High School Graduates Award, the United Negro College Fund, and the provision of computers, laboratory supplies, smart classroom tools, a well project, and educational materials for the Campus Early Childhood School.

Following the destruction of The Mico Library’s collection in Hurricane Gilbert, the Chapter launched and continues a major drive to replace books, journals, and other resources.

Members remain committed to supporting the college’s celebrations and educational activities, including its annual participation in the Penn Relays.

Affiliations & Goals
The Association was a member of the National Association of Jamaican and Supportive Organizations (NASO) and a founding member of the Union of Jamaican Alumni Associations (UJAA). Our long-term goal is to acquire a headquarters in New York. We deeply appreciate all members and friends whose unwavering support fuels the causes we champion.
